With both ourselves moving to the city last year and upon talking to others the initial idea behind this project began when we found the difficulty to comprehend the identity of Melbourne as a city.
We wanted to solve this issue through the principles of service design and attempted to visualise Melbourne by splitting its identity into three parts. People, Place and how these two interacted (We defined this as Movement). This method of visualisation received good feedback however after talking with one of the speakers Brad Alphonso he suggested that our project could hold more gravity if we decided on a target audience and designed a way for them to receive this information.
From here our project pivoted. Once we had chosen to target both locals and tourists the idea changed from an abstract installation into creating an interactive service which would provide an experience to our audience and be more effective in communicating these visualisations.
In building a service we decided we needed a way to communicate how we were unique as well as give the audience an idea of what an experience with us might be like.
We identified the tram network as something that is significant to Melbourne and its identity. This led us to build upon the existing network as a platform for sharing our visualisations.
